Platform

‘I was waiting for the train, standing pretty close to the yellow line on the platform, because the train was only a minute away and I wanted to be close to the door, you know. But there were these three seconds between the time I saw the front lights of the train and the time when I felt the air from the slipstream on my collar.

‘I didn’t notice at first, but I was standing opposite a sign next to the tracks below. “Value life. Act responsibly.” A safety message in four languages. I was staring pretty hard at it; I caught myself doing it. Thinking about what I probably shouldn’t have been.

‘The train hadn’t passed me yet, and I think I know it wasn’t just straying eyes because for a while I had to stop and think before the train was past.

‘That’s what gets me, that I couldn’t just stop and wait and not think about anything for half a second.’
