Mad Men Season 1

I’ve just watched the final episode of Season 1 of Mad Men and it was fantastic. Don’s pitch to the Kodak people was one of those great moments…

I’ve somehow managed to watch the episodes at a rate of slightly under one a day. It’s been magnificent. I have Season 2 waiting.

The society and the place and the time the show is set in isn’t one I haven’t been introduced to before, because my EE text (William Styron’s Sophie’s Choice) was set just a few years before 1960. There are long passages seemingly aimed at introducing how life in that time and place was different from life at the time of publication. When I watched Mad Men, a lot of the issues mentioned came up, and it was interesting to see how they interacted.

The characters are… fascinating.

The plot moves somewhat slowly for a TV serial but it works really well. I’ve heard from a few people who’ve watched it, and they really enjoy the clothes and color and the overall visual presentation. Those aren’t things I’m usually conscious of, but they definitely didn’t detract from my enjoyment.

Last week was mostly slow going on the study front. Post-lesson-stoppage life started slowly, but it’s been picking up momentum. One reason for that is my recently-adopted routine: Up some time before seven, coffee, lunch, coffee, dinner, post-dinner. Mad Men at about 9:30, and bed at about half-ten.

I’m six episodes in to Mad Men and now I can affirm my fan status. I’m hooked. ‘Mad Men at 9:30′ is motivation to get through the day properly, and having it just before bed has proved effective. There’s nothing like a good routine for promoting productive occupation, or so I’ve found after finally adopting one. (Friday was a noteworthy exception.)

Mad Men

It’s been a very long time since my OC fanboyism, when I used to look for episodes of The OC the week of the US telecast. Since then, I haven’t regularly watched any TV show. But after watching the first episode of Mad Men earlier tonight, I think that’s about to change. So far I’ve managed to resist watching the second episode the same night as the first, but I’m looking forward to watching it tomorrow. This is also interesting: Mad Men on Twitter.
